How To Pre Poo Your Hair

It is washday! Time to get rid of all the nasty dirt build up that has accumulated in your beautiful natural hair and keep your crown sparkling.

Before shampooing you should prepare your hair to prevent it from being damaged by the shampooing process. A common term used among naturalistas is to pre poo. In other words, to pre poo is to prepare your hair for shampooing.

This step is really important to your hair as it makes detangling easier preventing formation of knots during the wash day process which may eventually lead to breakage. And that is not what we want! It also softens your hair, forming a sort of protection against breakage. It also helps retain moisture which is vital in keeping your hair looking lustrous and frizz free.

All the above reasons make it a must add in your wash day routine. But then you’re wondering how best to pre poo your hair for easy shampooing… Read on to find out!

Gather Everything You Need

Collect all you need to do the pre poo and place them close to where you will be doing your pre poo. These items include:

  • The  pre poo treatment you will use
  • A plastic shower cap or natural hair steamer
  • Hair bands or butterfly clips for sectioning
  • A mirror to observe what you’re doing
  • A wide toothed comb

Gathering everything first will prevent

you from going back and forth looking for them and reduce any confusion.

Section your hair

Using a wide toothed comb or even your fingers, section your hair into manageable sections and tie each with a hair band or a butterfly clip. Sectioning your hair will ensure that each part of you r hair is well pre pood for easy shampooing. It will also come in handy during shampooing and deep conditioning. Working in sections is way better than working with your whole head.

Apply pre poo treatment to each section.

Unravel one section of your hair and apply your pre poo treatment to the scalp of that particular section and gently massage the treatment in. This helps improve blood circulation to your scalp.

Then move to the hair shaft itself and apply from the ends heading to the roots. Starting from the hair ends helps in protecting the delicate hair ends from damage. Ensure that the treatment is well distributed.

Follow up with detangling. First use your fingers to remove any knots and tangles before going in with a wide toothed comb. Do the same to all the other sections.

Put on a plastic shower cap or a natural hair steamer

After applying the pre poo treatment to your whole head, wear a plastic shower cap and wait for thirty minutes then proceed to shampooing.

You may also choose to pre poo overnight. In this case, just wear a satin bonnet over the plastic shower cap and proceed with shampooing the following morning.

If you choose to use a hair steamer, wait for 15- 20 minutes then proceed to shampooing.

Letting your hair sit under a shower cap or a hair steamer will provide time and heat necessary to let the pre poo treatment soak in.

Next time you pre poo, follow this procedure and tell us how it goes! Don’t forget to share with your fellow naturalistas!
